Lyrical Landscapes: Japanese Woodblock Prints of the 19th and 20th Centuries

Presenting a selection of Japanese woodblock prints featuring landscapes of Japan as seen through the eyes of 19th and 20th century artists Utagawa Hiroshige, Katsushika Hokusai and Kawase Hasui.

During the early 19th century, Japanese people were increasingly able to travel domestically for pleasure and also participate in more outdoor leisure activities such as attending festivals, taking boat trips and temple visits - all of which created a new demand for woodblock prints as souvenir images, giving rise to the landscape print as a popular genre, which continued into the 20th century.
