This print represents January in the calendar commissioned in 1953 by the Pacific Transport Lines. 500 copies of the calendar were produced for distribution in the United States, with each month represented by a woodblock print mounted onto a card backing with the months and days printed beneath, along with the logo for the Pacific Transport Lines. The present print has fresh, vibrant colours which is relatively rare due to the nature of the calendars being hung on the wall and faded over time. Many calendars would also have been discarded altogether after their usefulness as a calendar came to an end, increasing the scarcity of the prints.
