This striking design depicts the actor Ichikawa Danjuro IX playing the role of the Nagasaki pirate Kezori Kueimon; the hero of the drama Koi Minato Hakata no Hitofushi. Wearing an elaborate Chinese-style costume, he stands imposingly on the prow of his boat whilst performing the highlight of this play - the ferocious "staring at the sea" pose (Shiomi no mie) - a unique mie created by Ichikawa Danjuro IX for the role of Kezori Kueimon.
