Bells (suzu) and a footed bowl. From a rare series 'A Comparison of Famous Things in the Eastern Capital' (Toto meibutsu awase). Each surimono in the series features objects or scenes related to the location in Edo stated in a cartouche, in this case Omon-dori; a street leading to the Omon (Great Gate) of the Yoshiwara pleasure district. The hourglass-shaped cartouche containing the series title indicates that the series was commissioned by the Gogawa poetry group.
Hotei Gosei was a pupil of Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) and used the art name Hokuga until about 1810.
