A lively scene of numerous pleasure boats jostling on the Sumidagawa on a summer evening. The passengers are enjoying the fireworks bursting in the sky above the Ryogoku Bridge spanning the river behind them, where crowds have also gathered to enjoy the spectacle. All sorts of activities are going on aboard the boats including food and sake being consumed, musicians playing drums, a flute and shamisens, dancers with fans and a man selling slices of watermelon; no doubt a refreshing snack in the summer heat.
The artist's signature (Eisen ga) also playfully appears on the fan held by a standing woman on the left sheet and a box a man leans against in a boat on the centre sheet.
