A pupil of Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858), Sugakudo was noted for his bird and flower pictures, in particular this series Forty-eight Hawks Drawn from Life (Sho utsushi yonju-hachi taka). The prints of this series are especially prized for their high technical quality, skilful application of colour and fine embossing.
