Depicted here is a scene from the play Hakkenden Uwasa no Takadono, performed at the Morita Theatre in 1836. This play was based upon a voluminous novel (title: Nanso Satomi Hakkenden) written by Takizawa Bakin (1767-1848) which centres around the eight offspring resulting from a supernatural marriage between Princess Fusehime, the daughter of a warlord and the warlord's dog, Yatsufusa. The overarching theme of the tale is the restoration of a family's fortunes.
